i-nigma QR Code, Data Matrix and 1D barcode reader app review: transform your camera into a sophisticated barcode reader

Reviews

Introduction

This is a fairly useful app that you can use to transform your iPad’s integrated camera into a sophisticated barcode reader, capable of reading QR, DataMatrix, and UPC/EAN codes before presenting you with additional information regarding product information, price comparisons, and much more.

I would say that this is definitely a very nicely developed app that has clearly been put together with a great deal of knowledge and expertise.  I have found that some of the product information is lacking, however, which, to my mind places this app somewhere in the middle of the road in the greater context of barcode reader apps.

To summarize, this is definitely a safe bet for those of you looking for a decent barcode reader tool.

Scan QR and Data Matrix Barcodes With Ease

As I mentioned in the introduction, i-nigma QR Code, Data Matrix and 1D barcode reader enables you to use your iPad to scan QR, DataMatrix, and UPC/EAN codes as found in stores and supermarkets.

You can also use this app to scan colored barcodes, and more awkwardly designed or reversed ones such as those printed with brighter patterns on dark backgrounds.

One thing I do like about i-nigma is that you don’t have to specify which type of barcode you’re reading as it will detect it automatically. This is very useful for people like me who really don’t have a clue about the different types of barcodes: QR, DataMatrix, it’s all the same to me!

Learn More About Products and Promotions

A lot of brands these days are using QR and DataMatrix codes for marketing purposes, enabling you to learn more about products and promotions by simply scanning them. You might have noticed these scattered around on bus stops, billboards, and the like.

This app, of course, enables you to scan these codes so that you can access online content, and you can also share the information you find with your friends and family online via Facebook, Twitter, email, and text message.

In addition to all of this, you can even create your own QR codes from within the app in order to share contact details and other information with your friends.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Transform your iPad camera into a sophisticated barcode reader
  • Scan QR, DataMatrix, and UPC/EAN codes
  • No need to specify the barcode type as i-nigma will detect it automatically
  • Share scanned codes with others online via Facebook, Twitter, email, and text message
  • Create your own QR codes to share information with your friends

Cons

  • Product information can be a little limited from time to time, but not to the point that I feel it really detracts from the overall quality of the app too significantly

Final Words

i-nigma QR Code, Data Matrix and 1D barcode reader is a fairly standard example of a barcode reader app, as far as I’m concerned.

This certainly doesn’t mean that it’s sub-par or mediocre though, so if you’ve stumbled upon this review and want to use your iPad to scan barcodes then I’d say that this app is well worth downloading.
