Monster Slash app review: a clever line-drawing game with RPG elements

Reviews

Introduction

Most arcade games in the App Store right now are using the same level structure as Candy Crush Saga to appeal to the masses. I don’t think this is necessarily a good idea, but for some games it works well, especially puzzle games or games that you play for a short time. Monster Slash by Tapps Tecnologia da Informação Ltda. doesn’t sound like a puzzle game, and isn’t. I would describe it more like a strategy action, RPG app where you have to calculate the path of your weapon (the amazing Cleaverang) while enemies advance towards your position. Monster Slash is available for both iPad and iPhone.

Gameplay and Controls

The gameplay is simple, but the strategy behind it will get harder and harder. Your character, Brutus, is based at the bottom of the screen. He will advance through a straight level while enemies advance towards him from the top of the screen. Your task is to draw the path of the Cleaverang and hit all the enemies before they hit the bottom of the screen. This sounds easy, but as you progress, enemies will start moving and you need to plan ahead on how your Cleaverang moves. When you reach the end of the level, you will get rated between one to three stars. This is based upon how many times you got hit, as you will start with three lives.

Upgrading your Cleaverang and Other Powers

Throughout the game you will collect coins. Some of these are hidden in barrels, while others you will receive by defeating enemies. These coins can be used to buy extra lives and all kinds of power ups such as Ice potions that freeze all enemies on screen or the Arcane Stone, which will weaken your enemies. You can also use these coins to upgrade the speed, size, and path length of your Cleaverang, making it a lot more efficient against the increasingly growing army of enemies. The enemies keep evolving as well, getting all kinds of different powers to keep protected from the mighty Cleaverang and its master Brutus.

Conclusion

Monster Slash is definitely one of my favorite games from the last month. The game is quick and easy to learn, you can play it in short sessions, and it is challenging when it needs to be. The graphics are nice, the sound is decent, and the game doesn’t force you to buy any upgrades or spend any real-world money if you don’t want to, which makes it one of the best RPG apps for iPhone and iPad in my book. Enemy design is well done as well, so you will not get bored soon. The app is just over 63 MB and has loads of content.
