World Factbook Info Free app review: an access app to the CIA’s World Factbook

Reviews

Introduction

Personally, I quite like stats. I also like reading about the different countries in the world and all the information that is available about them. Usually I simply refer to Wikipedia for all my information, but there is one website on the Internet that has the most accurate and trustworthy on the internet; the CIA Factbook website. The downside to this factbook is that you have to be online to be able to visit it. Since there is so much information available, nobody has thought about gathering all that and sticking it into an app. Luckily, developer Andrei Zubarev has taken the time to create an app with all the information included, meaning that you will have a small encyclopedia of facts about countries available in your pocket at all times. World Factbook info free is available for both iPad and iPhone.

Design and Usability

The World Factbook is really well designed. All the information is easy to find and everything is well-organized. Even though there is no search function for countries, all the sovereign states of the world are available in a handy alphabetized list, so finding them wouldn’t take long. Tap on a country and you can find all the information you want to know, from simple things such as the number of inhabitants to transnational issues and economic welfare and issues. All of this information goes deeper as well, and will give you the latest numbers according to the latest update on the CIA website.

Other Features

On top of all this interesting information, you can also find an appendix, which gives you even more information, specifically about definitions and notes, abbreviations, and International organizations and groups that don’t really belong in one country. You can also go to a ranking page, where all the stats are handily compared to each other so you can see how your country weighs up against all the others in the world. The app also contains maps of every country, including their biggest cities and geography.

Conclusion

If you often get in heated discussions with your friends, download this app right now. You will be able to prove your right within a few taps, as this source is probably the best source in the world when reading about a country’s statistics. Individual country stats are interesting, but the ranking pages are even better, due to the fact you can compare different countries to each other on all kinds of different subjects. The app is completely available offline, meaning all the information must be downloaded. Taking that in mind, the app is really small for something so comprehensive. It just is under 20 MB. The app is designed for iPhone and iPad.
