WSJ Live app review: bringing you interactive video news courtesy of The Wall Street Journal

Reviews

Introduction

Change things up by grabbing your iPhone or iPad with your morning coffee ritual rather than a newspaper. WSJ Live is a high-quality app with high-definition videos from over 2000 journalists from all over the world that really come alive, especially on the iPad.

This isn't just another news app; it's a one-stop resource for news coverage ranging from politics and markets to lifestyle, markets, and technology. Each day, you will get access to live programming of over 4.5 hours to help you stay on top of the news. It's no wonder that this app has taken the number one spot for news apps in over 13 countries. But does it really live up to the high quality of The Wall Street Journal? Let's find out.

Daily Scheduled Programming

WSJ Live has a daily scheduled programming which goes as follows:

News Hub: Breaking Economics News
Markets Hub: Complete Markets Coverage
Lunch Break: Today’s Headlines plus the ‘Business of Life’
Digits: Breaking Tech News
Opinion Journal: Political Commentary
Off Duty: The Latest in Lifestyle

The entire video archive can also be viewed from this app directly onto your iPhone and iPad. I have absolutely no complaints with the content, which is high-quality, as expected.

Interface

The WSJ Live interface is clean and very easy to navigate. There are four icons on the bottom of the interface: WSJ Spotlight, categorized Videos, Program Guide, and WSJ Search.

Unfortunately, I got several “cannot play video” errors and I kept getting that message from various Internet networks, including my home, a friend's place, and a cafe. Funny how the interesting content didn't always play, but there were several 30-second commercials which streamed just fine.

Speaking of which, the commercials are played before the video you have chosen to view even starts streaming. Because this is a free app, one would expect some advertising, but it gets rather tiresome to view them over and over prior to each video, even if the video you are about to watch is only a minute or two in length.

Final Words

WSJ live is a decent app if you want to get live video streams directly to your iPhone or iPad. Although there are some bugs and the ads are a little annoying, it's still a free app at the end of the day and it brings some solid content. Perhaps in the future, the developers will work on ironing out the flaws.
