GPSmeter app review: a measuring tool

Reviews

Introduction

If you need a reliable and easy-to-use GPS tool that can be of assistance with outdoor activities the GPSmeter app may be a good option. This app can be used on your iPod touch, iPad, and iPhone and is meant to provide you with measurements and route information. This one offers some multi-tasking features that not all GPS apps offer so the question is, does this one exceed others? Let's take a closer look.

A Lot of Hype - Not a Lot of Follow Through

This app has a very impressive write up on its iTunes description page, making it sound feature-packed and versatile. What doesn't match up is the customer rating score of only two out of five stars. So why does this app have such an unimpressive rating? Unfortunately the comments all seem to be quite similar: there are issues with the app working, getting a signal, and displaying correctly particularly on the iPad. Obviously users are looking for a reliable GPS app and it seems this one isn’t hitting the mark in that category.

The app hasn't been updated in quite some time now, three years to be exact, which of course can play into how well it works. In the world of apps that’s an awful long time not to make any tweaks, improvements, changes, or updates.

The Features You'll Find

It's still worth looking at and considering the features offered in this one because when it works it's actually not a bad option. As mentioned you can use this app for taking measurements. What's meant by that is that you can measure things such as your route length to work, your golf drive, altitude differences, minimum and maximum values, and average values. This measurement feature alone can come in handy. The way this app works is that it uses your GPS receiver and then makes use of a specialized algorithm in order to give more accurate results.

When it comes to the units it can measure you will have no problem with a variety of speed units, length units, coordinate formats, and both metering and real-time values. Map view can be used and is provided by Google. This just gives the user a way to track in a visual way.
Unfortunately my own experience with the app hasn’t been positive, not once has it been able to properly identify my position therefore making the app quite useless.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Offers a variety of measuring tools and features
  • Send information by email
  • Track on a map (Google)

Cons

  • The app is not stable or reliable and has yet to work during my test period

Final Thoughts

The GPSmeter app for your iPod touch, iPad, and iPhone could be a wonderful tool for measuring different types of units; however, it is very unstable, it’s unreliable, crashes, and just doesn’t work most of the time.
