An Appy Good Night app review: a children's book with great graphics

Reviews

Introduction

There are so many different children’s books on the App Store, it must be a real jungle for parents to find which ones are good and which ones are not. Luckily for them, I have a few nephews that I am reading to and with, meaning I have got the luxury of trying them all out. I have seen some terrible children’s books so far, but luckily also some very good ones. An Appy Goodnight by MyAppyKid LLC is one of these successful apps that actually helps your children learn how to read, while engaging them in to learning new words and fun interactivity.

Graphical Style

As this is a children’s book, the graphical style of the illustrations is made really fun. The app looks fantastic and is easy to use. Children of ages from two to eight will really enjoy listening or reading this book themselves. The main menu holds four options. Read Myself is aimed at parents and children who already know how to read, while the Read to Me option is more aimed for the smaller children. The latter two options are an autoplay option, which is where the book turn into a movie style playbook, while the Choose a Chapter function is handy for when you want to continue reading on a later date. All in all, the app has enough to offer for both younger and older children.

Sound and interactivity

The voice who reads the book out loud to you and your children has been very well-picked. He has a very soothing voice and will put your children to sleep in no time at all. It is read with a British accent, and the entire book rhymes perfectly with everything it should. In terms of interactivity, the app offers only small amounts of this. Don’t expect games and puzzles, but if you tap on the main characters of the story, or anywhere around the screen, you will get to hear sounds and see some of the characters move or change the background. All in all this is enough interactivity to be able to call yourself interactive, so another job well done.

You can even set the book to auto play, where you can leave your kid alone and have it watch the book as it would do a movie. The voice of the app is very soothing and will put your kid to sleep in no time. The app is compatible with both iPad and iPhone and is just under 43 MB.
