Lionheart Tactics app review: a real tactical RPG that is free to play

Introduction

One of my favorite genres in video games ever must be the tactical Role Playing Game (RPG). Not only does this genre bring a ton of strategy to the table, but you also need to make sure your characters are well-adjusted to each other as there are many different tactics that can be deployed. The App Store always lacked these games, except for the odd, really expensive licensed tactical RPG from big games companies. Kongregate, known from their free to play gaming website, decided to fill this void by releasing Lionheart Tactics, a true tactical RPG app set to a fantasy backdrop. This game has everything you would expect from a tactical RPG.

Gameplay

Tactical RPGs are always turn-based, making this genre a joy to play when you are doing something else. The action of battles takes part on a grid, where you control your heroes. Your heroes will only have a limited amount of movement point, which is different for every character class. After each battle won, you will receive rewards such as gold, and, in the case of this game, crowns. Gold is used to buy new equipment and buy new skills for your heroes, while crowns are much more valuable and are used for all kinds of purchases that can prolong your gaming experience.

After each battle, your heroes will also gain experience. This experience will make your characters level up, making them stronger and giving them access to better skills. You select your battles on an over world map, where you can also visit towns and do other activities, such as hire new heroes to join you in battle.

Graphics and Sound

The graphics of this game might look a bit kiddy, but the gameplay counters that nicely. The graphics are easy to follow, even though sometimes they are a bit dark when using an older iDevice, even with your brightness all the way up. The sound of the game has everything you will expect from a fantasy game. The sound of arrows, clanging of swords and battle shouts for special skills are all set to draw you in. The game offers hundreds of battle, all free to play, but you need to be online to play the game.

Conclusion

Lionheart Tactics is by far the best free RPG for iPhone in regards to the deepest and most rewarding free-to-play game I have played in a long time. The battles really require strategy and tactics, and creating your team gives you enough freedom to play the game multiple times. It’s too bad you have to be online to play this game, as these games can take up a lot of time, and on long commutes this would be an ideal game to play. The game is compatible with iPad and iPhone and is just under 83 MB.
