Official F1 app review: finally an official F1 app for all the fans out there
Introduction
I’m always excited when the official app of any sporting event comes out. Usually these are a lot later than all the unofficial ones, but in some cases, these tend to show up just in time. The good thing about these official apps is that they have all the correct information about the events, and all the licenses to photos of athletes, teams, and all the other necessary imagery to make the sport look like it should. The same counts for the Official F1 App by Formula One Digital Media Limited. This app, developed for both iPad and iPhone, is a fantastic way to follow the new F1 season. As I haven’t looked at any other apps in this genre yet, I haven’t got anything to compare it to, but what I’ve seen looks really good.

What it Offers
This official app offers exactly what you would expect from the Official Formula 1 App. In this free app, you get to see all the leaderboards, lap times, sector classifications, news stories and section commentary, all delivered to you in a brand-new, beautifully designed interface. All of the official imagery is used in the app and all of the maps, cars, photos and other pictures are in full high-resolution. You will need to be connected to the Internet though, as all this Formula 1 goodness needs to be downloaded. Initially the app will take a while to update. The length of this depends on your Internet connection, but I suggest you sit near a Wi-Fi access point.

In-App Purchases
As you may have heard, nothing in life is free. Although all the features I have mentioned in the last paragraph are free, there are a lot more features in the app that are locked away behind an in-app purchase. These include all kinds of personalization options, Team Radio transmissions, live tire information, text and audio commentary during races, and many different other features. You will get a notification about this when you start the app, but beware; this is quite a large sum of money. All of these features will cost $10.99. This premium package has not been tested for this review.

Conclusion
As with most official apps, the Official Formula 1 App is definitely one to download for all the big F1 fans out there. Just be very aware, the initial download is quite large, and you will need quite a good Internet connection for it. The in-app purchase is quite steeply priced, but unlocks tons of cool features that the true fan would really like to access. The initial download is just over 50 MB. The app is compatible with both iPad and iPhone.
