Pythonista app review: create interactive experiments and prototypes using multi-touch, animations, and sound

Reviews

Introduction

This is a must-have iPhone and iPad app for any of you who are in the process of learning Python, the coding language, as it enables you to very easily create interactive experiments and prototypes using animations, sound, and more.

I should probably start off this review by saying, as I often do, that I am merely a humble writer with no knowledge or understanding of Python code. I can vouch for the smoothness with which this app operates, as well as the user-friendliness of the interface, but my expertise pretty much stops there!

With that in mind, I do think that this app appears to be a powerful resource for students of Python, and would say that it should provide a very handy on-the-go utility for learning the language and experimenting as you progress.

Code Editor, Syntax Highlighting, and Much More

Pythonista features a fully featured, scriptable code editor with syntax highlighting and code completion, offering you a wonderfully convenient interface with which to write code and experiment with concepts.

The syntax highlighting is especially helpful, and you can color-code things with various themes to make for easier delineation.

The app also features an extended keyboard which has been specifically designed for use with Python, so you should have no problem tapping out strings of code.

Includes Most of the Standard Python Library

If you’re a complete beginner like me then you’ll be pleased to know that Pythonista comes with complete documentation featuring quick lookup directly from within the editor, so you’ll always have that point of reference to hand if you need it.

Finally, this app includes most of the standard Python library in addition to some extra modules for graphical and audio elements, plus there are loads of examples included to help provide some food for thought and get you started off.

Final Words

As you can probably tell from my writing, I don’t like to pretend I have a great understanding of what Pythonista is capable of, but I am thoroughly impressed with how clean and crisp the presentation is, as well as how freely the features run together.

This really makes for a streamlined and enjoyable work environment, which I would argue is one of the single most important things to consider if you’re going to be spending hours learning from it.

This is quite obviously a very high-quality development which has had a lot of thought go into it, so it definitely receives a very strong recommendation from me.
