Prime Rhyme app review: the go-to app for all the budding poets out there

Reviews

Introduction

When I downloaded this app for the purpose of reviewing it, my plan was to write the whole review using rhymes. This was something I soon let go of, as I found out it is really hard to create a review that reads well, has good content, and rhymes. Prime Rhyme developed by Eirik Berntsen is a very simple reference app that allows you to find words that rhyme with a word of your choice. The app is designed for both iPad and iPhone, and you will need to be online to use this app.

How it Works

The app shines through its simplicity. You simply type in any word you want to find rhyming words for and the search engine will do the rest. A full list will be shown as soon as the app has found any and these words will be displayed in no specific order. It would be a lot better if they added an alphabet wheel on the side so you could browse per letter, especially when the search returns a lot of words.

Also, the search engine sometimes comes back with words that don’t really rhyme, but just sound similar or look alike. According to the app, my name (pronounced as Wow-t) apparently rhymes with out, which is true, but also with mange tout, which suffers from a French pronunciation. If you tap on a word, you will also get a short definition of what the word means. This could have easily been done on the same screen, as the app doesn’t use most of the space that your device delivers.

Speed and Ads

The speed of the app fluctuates hugely. I’ve been playing around with the app for a long while, but have had highly different search result speeds back. Sometimes the app comes with an answer in seconds, while with another word it took almost one minute, and the slow return had nothing to do with the difficulty of the word.

Throughout the app, you will constantly see ads on the screen. The ads are positioned in the lowest part of the screen and will not bother you at all, except when you want to select the word just above it.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • A great reference guide for looking up rhyme words
  • Each word comes with a dictionary explanation

Cons

  • You have to be online to use the app
  • Some search results simply don’t rhyme

Conclusion

Prime Rhyme is a decent reference app, even though its super minimal in its offerings. The app works relatively well, but suffers from low server speeds at times and it will give you back words that don’t actually rhyme. The fact that the app is compatible with both iPad and iPhone is a good thing, but the fact you need to be online at all times can be quite annoying. The app is just over 10 MB.
