FTL: Faster Than Light app review: a great roguelike with a science fiction twist
Introduction
In one of my reviews from a few weeks ago I completely praised a game called Cardinal Quest 2. That game offered endless randomized levels and had so much depth that you will keep coming back to play it. This wasn’t the first time I actually heard from the roguelike genre, as a year and a half ago, a game called FTL: Faster Than Light was released for the PC and made a lot of waves in the PC gaming community. Now, a year and a half later, developer Subset Games has finally released this game for the iPad. Ever since I bought this game, which will set you back $9.99, I haven’t touched another game again, not even Cardinal Quest 2!

Gameplay
The game starts when you are given a ship with an important message on board. You will have to jump between solar systems and faster than light portals to escape the rebel fleet and bring your message back to the federation before the rebels catch up with you. Throughout the game you will receive all kinds of resources that can help you fight other ships, upgrade your own ship and buy all kinds of weapons and other items that will give you an edge in your quest. The game is certainly not easy. As soon as you die, you’re dead and you will have to start the game again from scratch. Like other roguelike games, no play-through will be the same and every event is randomly generated.

Sound and Graphics
To be honest, the game doesn’t look as nice as it could, but it doesn’t matter at all. The gameplay and the constantly evolving game worlds are so well-designed that the low-quality graphics never get in your way. It will actually make your experience even better as it gives you a lot more freedom to imagine what it would be like. The same goes for the sound. I believe these two features have been held back purposely to make the gameplay of the game even better. Due to the nature of the game, you won’t ever get bored, as there is so much to explore that you will never see the same thing twice.

Pros and Cons
Pros
-
Great gameplay and controls
-
Every play-through is different
-
Tons of different ships and weapons to deploy
Cons
-
Even though the graphics and sounds are quite minimalist, I have nothing bad to say
Conclusion
FTL: Faster Than Light is probably one of the best games in the App Store at the time I write this. You can really lose yourself in its expansive, constantly changing universe, and you will never lack the feeling of variety, as there are so many customizable parts in the game. The app is available for iPad only, but works on iPhone too. The app will set you back $9.99, but is completely worth it.
