Horn app review: one of the best games in the App Store

Reviews

Introduction

When the App Store was first introduced, the store actually reminded me more of a simple arcade than somewhere you could actually find and play full-fledged games. The App Store remained that way until a few big gaming companies actually started releasing tech demos of what was possible on devices with iOS 5 and higher. These companies, however, failed for a long time after their tech demo to actually release an actual game with the visuals they promised in the tech demo. Luckily for the consumers, a game called Horn by Phosphor Game Studios came to light and blew anyone who played it away with fantastic visuals and an awesome scope. The game is compatible with both iPhone and iPad.

Gameplay

Horn is a third-person action adventure, comparable to the hugely popular Zelda series and the fantastic Shadow of the Colossus. You play as Horn, a blacksmith’s apprentice who wakes up in a tower and has no idea where he is. Soon he finds out that his village and country have been overrun by large robot-like creatures, often with an odd sense of humor. You move Horn around by simply tapping on the screen.

The gameplay is pretty self-explanatory, and usually a little white hand or swipe will show you what you need to do to continue the game. The game claims to be freely navigable, but I found that the game still is rather linear, but this is definitely a very open world compared to other iOS games.

Graphics and Sound

As mentioned, the gameplay is pretty good, but is completely outshone by the graphics of the game. Wow, these graphics are something else, and even a year and a half after its release, the graphics of Horn are still amongst the best on the App Store. The lighting effects are beautiful, animations are smooth and believable and environments look handcrafted. The developer surely has spent a lot of time on this. The sound of the game is very good as well, and every dialog is spoken and feels natural as well. There sometimes is some forced acting in the dialogs, but that’s something you will have to deal with.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Amazing graphics
  • Great sounds and good dialogs
  • Fantastic open world gameplay
  • Completely free

Cons

  • Nothing negative can be said about this app

Conclusion

The reason why I haven’t downloaded this app before is because it cost $9.99. Now, at the time of writing, the app is completely free. At the moment, there is no reason why you should not play this game, as it's stunning-looking, great-sounding and really fun to play. The app is compatible with both iPad and iPhone, as long as you’re running iOS 5 or higher. The only thing that might hold you back on downloading the game is its size, but remember, it includes all spoken dialog and beautiful graphics.
