Pedi Safe - ICU, OR, ED Medications app review: a rapid reference for healthcare professionals who care for pediatric patients

Reviews

Introduction

What we have here is a rapid reference for health professionals who are involved in the emergency or critical care of pediatric patients, providing information on medications dosages, Broselow colors, airway equipment selection, and loads more, directly on your iPhone and iPad.

The best iPad apps for drawing 2021

I’ve recently grown to really appreciate these medical reference apps that are designed largely for professionals as I think that have a quick digital point of reference can be far more efficient than having to thumb through a textbook to find what you’re looking for.

Having said that, this app certainly isn’t without its shortcomings, so let’s take a slightly closer look to see where Pedi Safe shines and where it falls just short of the mark.

Your One-Stop Pediatric Resource

Pedi Safe - ICU, OR, ED Medications has been designed to help doctors, nurses, pediatricians, and other healthcare professionals quickly access critical pediatric information without having to rely on memory or textbooks.

Within the app you’ll find information such as pediatric and adult weight-based doses for all kinds of medications, including additional entries for details of ACLS and PALS emergency medications so that you can react as quickly as is needed in critical situations.

Not Without Its Flaws

There is also a Broselow reference guide that you can use to identify a patient’s weight, although one user has remarked negatively about the shortcomings of this feature in the iTunes description page. See the Pros & Cons section below for more information on this.

In addition to all of this, you’ll find details of the normal vital signs for pediatric patients based on varying criteria such as age and weight, and you can also use this app to determine which type and size of airway equipment to use.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Quickly access critical information accurately without having to rely on memory or textbooks
  • Includes pediatric and adult weight-based doses for medications
  • Use Broselow colors to help identify weight
  • Quickly determine which type and size of airway equipment to use
  • Refer to the normal vital signs for pediatric patients based on varying criteria
  • Includes details of ACLS and PALS emergency medications

Cons

  • One user has remarked that this app is limited if you don’t have a Broselow tape available because “there is no way to estimate the patients [sic] weight based upon age.” The user goes on to say, “There is also no way to add in other medications if the author doesn’t include one that you like to use.” The app entitled Peds Meds is recommended as a possible alternative if you find Pedi Safe to be inadequate.

Final Words

Pedi Safe - ICU, OR, ED Medications isn’t perfect but it should provide at least some very useful information to those of you who are in the appropriate lines of work.

I would definitely recommend considering this iPhone and iPad app, but be aware that there may be more suitable alternatives available within the same price range.
