Soccer Rally 2 app review: a mix between a football and a driving game

Reviews

Introduction

Some developers really surprise me. It can be really hard to stand out and create something original while not overdoing it and creating something absolutely outrageous. I especially like it when developers try to blend two popular genres together. This has been done by quite a few developer in the past few years, and I’m surprised not more developers have tried this, as these genre blending games can become pretty successful. Soccer Rally 2 by IceFlame Ltd. is one of these genre blending games that successfully combines a football (soccer) game with a racing game. This might sound ridiculous, but the end product is actually really fun.

Gameplay

The game starts of with a tutorial, where you can select which gameplay style you prefer. You can pick from two control methods, one where you actually have a steering wheel in the corner and one where you use directional buttons to steer your car. Personally I couldn’t figure out how the steering wheel mechanic worked, but the directional buttons really did the trick for me. In the tutorial you will have to complete all kinds of challenges to prove yourself worthy for entering a tournament where you play against other cars in a football match. The goal is to score more goals as your opponent, and you will have to use your car to get the ball in the other player’s goal. This is surprisingly fun and really easy to play.

Graphics and Sound

During gameplay, you will watch your car from above in a bird’s eye view. This way you can keep a good overview of the patch and your opponents while you can also control your car really easy. You will sometimes also get a 3D view, but this is only when you’re in your garage pimping your car or shopping for a new one. The sound of the game is really good. The developer has chosen perfect songs for in the menu to keep you entertained while you’re looking for the right option and while you’re waiting for the next match to load.

Conclusion

I had never heard of Soccer Rally before my eye fell on the second part in the series. I didn’t play the first one, but I can really recommend the second one, especially for people who like racing games and football. The soundtrack of the game is phenomenal and the graphics of the game work perfect for what the game is. The app offers a lot of free game time, though to unlock better cars you will need to spend some real money. The app is designed for both iPad and iPhone and is just shy of 200 MB
