Matthew Henry Commentary app review: get over six volumes of verse-by-verse commentary on the KJV translation of the Holy Bible

Reviews

Introduction

If you are looking for a trusted source that brings you the commentary for each verse of the entire Holy Bible, then Matthew Henry Commentary is the perfect app for your iPhone or iPad.

This app contains the complete six-volume set of verse-by-verse commentary totaling over 5,850 pages that contain more than 64,000 scripture references in the palm of your hand. The commentary is for the King James Version (KJV) translation of the Bible.

At $1.99, this is a very reasonably priced app and is sure to help you gain a deeper understanding about what this Holy book is all about.

User Interface

Matthew Henry Commentary is a super-fast and very user-friendly app. The navigational controls are designed to be simplistic so that you don't have to “learn” how to use this app before you can start gaining knowledge.

This intuitive interface fashions two arrows for the left or right to go back and forward between chapters respectively. If you want a list of all the books, chapters, and their verses, you can touch the book icon. Not only can you view the list here, but you will also be able to jump to your desired verse or chapter by taping on it. For instant scripture-viewing purposes, you can tap the blue scripture reference icon.

Although I thoroughly enjoyed the user interface and general look and feel of this app, I would have appreciated an option to change the font size, as it is much too small for an iPhone. It's not unreadable, but I imagine that prolonged reading, as would be the case with this app, would probably result in a tension headache! I would suggest using landscape mode, which is fully supported and makes for reading which is easier on the eyes.

Self-Contained App

Downloading Matthew Henry Commentary takes up 17.6 megabytes on your iOS device. It's important to note here that once downloaded, you will not require an Internet connection to view any of the six volumes or the reference scripture texts form the KJV, allowing you to use this app no matter where you are.

If you have to stop reading in a hurry, you never have to worry about trying to remember which chapter or verse you were on. This app will automatically save your page and retrieve it when you open up this app again.

You will also be able to view your history so you know which chapters you have already looked at, in case you need to pull it up for a quick referral. Alternatively, use the powerful search feature to find specific verses within the app using phrases or words.
