Archer’s Wrath app review: a simple dual stick shooter

Reviews

Introduction

Some genres are not very well represented in the App Store. While other genres are simply overrunning the digital shop. One of the genres that is severely lacking in the store is the dual-stick shooting genre. In this arcade sub-genre you move with one analog stick while aiming and shooting with the other. While the iPad and iPhone don’t have physical analog sticks, these can easily be mimicked digitally, which is something we see done very often for the left analog stick. In Archer’s Wrath for iPad and iPhone you simply defeat wave after wave of enemies to save your town and increase your skills and weaponry. The game by developer Xin Li is just shy of 24 MB.

Gameplay

Let me explain a little bit more about the dual-stick shooter. This genre was made popular in the early 2000s when console controllers were given a second analogue stick for camera control in 3D games. Developers soon figured out that other functions could be given to this second stick and a new genre of arcade games were born. Now you could not only dodge incoming missiles and enemies easily, but also aim and fire at the same time you are moving, giving a new gameplay dimension to a genre that has not changed much in many years.

In Archer’s Wrath there are only melee enemies, some with a longer range but only dangerous up close, so moving around is the way to stay alive. The clever thing is that you will be a lot more accurate up close.

Graphics, Sound, and Upgrades

The graphics of the game are very basic. In the town screen you will have a lot more detail, while in the battle scenes you will see a lot less detail. The backgrounds are quite dull and the character animations are extremely limited. The sound is even worse and has nothing going for it, but it doesn’t stand in the way of the gameplay. In the town screen you can visit all kinds of shops to upgrade your skills, buy newer and stronger bows, and upgrade your health. All of this cost gold that you will earn in battles, though of course this can also be purchased in an in-game store.

Conclusion

If you are like me and don’t care so much about graphics and sound, you will love this game. The gameplay and upgrade systems are very good and the game is really fun to play. There are in-app purchases you can use to get ahead of the curve quickly, but they are not needed to finish the game. The game is compatible with both iPad and iPhone and is just under 24 MB, which is perfect for what the game has to offer.
