Big Lens app review: elevate your photos to the next level

Reviews

Introduction

Whether you're a professional photographer or a novice hobbyist, Big Lens is an app that is sure to expand your iPhone and iPad photography experience.

Available for download in the App Store for 99 cents, this app comes packed with five superb features that are otherwise hard to find on photography apps including, but not limited to, DSLR- level Depth Of Field! It should go without saying that this is an astoundingly great app for its price, provided that the developers also had some time left over for to make the UI and user experience match up to the features.

This app was selected as the Starbucks “Pick of the Week” in the United States, was featured on the likes of Wired.com, AppAdvice.com, and ephotozine.com, and even hit the amazing milestone of a million downloads within six months of its release.

Smart Focus System & Aperture Control

Big Lens downloads really quickly, taking up just 36.4 MB of space on your iPhone or iPad. This is a great relief because many photography apps unnecessarily take up triple-digit data and for those of us with 8GB models, even the nicer apps cannot be used regularly because they are simply too hefty to keep on the hard drive. I'd rather save that space for the pictures I'm about to capture and edit!

When you have picked out a picture, you can try out the Smart Focus System wherein you can simply tap on areas where you wish to apply the focus of your photograph. Highlight geometric shapes, use the lasso tool, or you can choose advanced mode to manually define your focus area. Smart Focus will then automatically refine your selection with precision.

It takes just one gesture to completely change the look and feel when you apply the Aperture, blurring the unfocused areas in an instant and bringing out the elements you previously highlighted.

Filters, Focus, and More

After you have applied the Depth-of-Field, you can then choose from one of eighteen filters that enhance colors, increase contrast, or add Lomo effects.

Want to tweak it even further? Perfectionists need not worry; you can instantly modify the focus and blur area with your fingers. Enhance as well as retouch the areas you'd like to retain focus. This will make it easier for you to ensure that the right elements are standing out in your images.

You can compare the image you're working on to what it originally looked like by using the before and after preview function to ensure you get just the look you want.
