Some iPhone sports games really don’t need the push of a large event like this, while others simply use it as a push to get more people playing their game concept by sticking a particular skin on it. The latter is in my opinion also the case with Soccer Stars by Miniclip.com.

This game, developed for both iPad and iPhone brings a simple game concept to your device, and sticks a nice polished layer of football (soccer) over the top. The app is free to play and weighs in at just under 35 MB.

Gameplay

The gameplay of the game is extremely easy, especially if you have played games like Angry Birds or anything similar. If you have played air hockey, the game will also play to your advantage. Basically, the ball is now the puck and each player has five paddles on the pitch.

Every turn, as the game is turn based, you get to launch one of your paddles towards the football, or to place them tactically. AS soon as the ball falls into your goal, the opponent scores and vice versa.

This sounds easy, but as there are so many paddles on the pitch, and the physics of the game are quite good, you will never guess where the ball turn up next! You simply move the direction of your puck with one finger, while with the second finger you can adjust the strength of your shot.

Graphics and Sound

The graphics of the game are quite basic, as the pucks will simply have the flag of your chosen nation on them. There is nothing more to it, but all the menus are well-designed and easy to use. They look great too, but don’t expect the second coming with the design of this game.

The sound of the game is also decent, but again nothing new either. All in all this is a game that doesn’t do much new, except sticking this gameplay form in a football coating. The online modes are great though, and will add a ton of replayability to the game.

Conclusion

I really enjoyed playing Soccer Stars while watching a few matches of the World Cup last night, but I did get bored quite quickly. The online modes are fantastic to play, but do nothing new compared to other similar games on the App Store.

The graphics and the sound are decent, but nothing more. All and all I’d call this a mediocre game with nothing new added. The app is designed for both iPad and iPhone.
