Math Puppy app reveiw: the second step in math apps

Introduction

Math Puppy is an iPad and iPhone app designed to assist beginning mathematicians with basic calculations. The free version has subtraction, but if you purchase the full version for $0.99 you also have access to addition, multiplication, and division.  Math Puppy uses fun games such as Math Bingo and Math Challenge to assist with learning, and also includes an animated calculator for your child to have fun making calculations.

Why Download this App?

Math Puppy is a fun app for kids who are above counting, but not quite ready for more challenging math apps. There are only a few apps in this age and ability range that I would recommend, and this is one of them.

In the full version, your child gets to pick an avatar puppy, and can enter his or her name. Additionally, you can change the difficulty mode. In the free version, you can try out the subtraction in easy mode. Additionally, in the full version, you can shuffle the questions between all modes of operation.

Math Puppy also gives the kids motivation. In the challenge mode, your child gets three stars representing lives for errors, and a time bar of 40 seconds. If you answer incorrectly, or run out of time, you only lose a star, not the whole game. If you fill up all of your smiley face tokens, you win the challenge!

 

Fun Learning, Means More Retained

Math Puppy is fun! My six-year-old tester enjoyed the app, even though she is not quite ready for subtraction. She can do some basic subtraction, but our focus is more on addition currently. There are other apps that I use for this, which have been reviewed by other writers. Teach Me: Preschool and Teach Me: Kindergarten are great starting points using counters that your student can repeatedly add, subtract, and count to get the right answer. Once they have mastered these skills, they are ready for Math Puppy!

• Gives the student lives, a timer, and tokens to motivate and also keep the learning positive

Cons

• Only subtraction comes unlocked, and I would have preferred to see addition be the first step in the app

 

Final Thoughts

Math Puppy is an iPad and iPhone app intended to quiz young children with basic mathematic functions. The subtraction feature comes unlocked in the free version, but I would have liked to have seen the addition come first. This app is set up for younger students ages six to seven, but the cute animations will likely make the student feel like he or she is playing a little kid's game. Overall, I like this app, and would recommend it to parents of dog-loving children, or those with advanced younger students.
