Veggie Hipster app review: avoid all the meats!

Reviews

Introduction

There are plenty of games available on the iPhone and iPad that will help you kill time, whether you are procrastinating from work, or waiting for your daily bus to take you home. Veggie Hipster is one such game but with an ideological twist.

This game has been conceptualized and developed by an individual by the name of Richardo Beracha, who believes that Veganism is the spiritually superior way of life. In line with this theme, the game entails a simple side-scrolling character who must dodge the chunks of meat falling from the sky.

You can purchase this app from the Games section of the App Store for $1.99. Let's find out if it's worth the cost!

Interface & Theme

Veggie Hipster only takes up 2.1 MB of space on your iOS device, which not only means it's lightweight, but it'll also download and launch in an instant. This app has a beautifully simple yet pleasant-looking interface, which features a sole character, a glasses and hat-wearing mustached man. Unfortunately there are ads present in this app which might come up at inopportune moments. They can be removed, however, through an in-app purchase of 99 cents.

The premise of the game, as I mentioned before, is themed around veganism, which is the avoidance of animal products for moral and ethical reasons. In this game, the man stands on a piece of land on a relatively clear day and finds himself being rained on, except this rain is not made up of water, but rather with animal products such as cheeseburgers, drumsticks, steaks, and hot dogs.

The objective of the game is to score points by avoiding the meaty precipitation.

Gameplay Experience

Although I didn't try out this game on my iPad, Veggie Hipster for iPhone was an absolute blast to play! The controls are simple enough: a hand icon appears under the character and he can be controlled by swiping left of right to evade the chunks of meat falling from the sky. Through the game, the meat starts to fall faster and in higher quantities, to keep the player guessing.

In the same vein as the likes of Angry Birds, this single-player game is highly addictive, thanks to a gameplay which is simple, yet just challenging enough to keep you coming back for more.

The only aspect of the game that I would question is the premise. Veganism is a fairly controversial topic which tends to have polarized views, so a game based around such a theme could potentially lose some players because their beliefs and ideologies might not match up.

Having said that, it's also possible that due to its controversial theme and clear “pro-vegan” message, this game might garner more attention from those whose views do align with that of the developer's. It's also worth mentioning that despite my own personal beliefs that do not go with the theme of this game, I still had a great time playing it and likely will be playing it often in the coming weeks and months!
