Take a Ride on the Learning Train

Phonics and Letter Sounds School is a fun game for preschoolers. There are a variety of activities to test your child’s reading, matching, letter sound recognition, and so on.

The game starts out on an island roughly shaped like Australia. There are seven groupings, and you can start with lower or upper case. Next you simply click the play button, and off you go on your adventure!

The first level of this educational app starts with an introduction to the letter sounds, and each animal has a letter next to it. You draw some of the letters, tracing from the green dot to the red dot.

Each letter is taught in a sequence of strokes; however, you must also wait for the next instruction and pull the pencil, or in this case finger, off the page prior to the next stroke. After tracing, you pop balloons for the letter sound that you hear.

There are also letter-matching cards, lots of animals to drop into the train cars when their sound is spoken, and more! Every few activities, your child earns a sticker for a reward chart.

Limitations

Phonics and Letter Sounds School is a paid game app, so you can only do the S, M, T, A level. This gives you a fairly good sample of the app prior to purchasing. If your child likes trains, this is a good way to motivate him or her to learn.

Each round has increasingly more train cars to fill with correct answers, but it is not so difficult as to overwhelm. The child earns both stars across the top of the screen and stickers at the end of the round.

Phonics and Letter Sounds School  is an iPad educational phonics app that helps kids learn letter sounds, printing, and more. There is a free trial that allows your child to test the app, and after that you can decide if this is a good match for your child.

While the full app is not free, I appreciate that there is a trial. There are a lot of phonics apps, and many of them require an in-app purchase. The trial is great.
