Introduction

As far as free interactive story books for children go, My First JCB - Digger Fun, developed for both iPad and iPhone by developer FirstyWork, must be one of the best I have seen yet. Not only does this app contain an interactive story featuring four different digger characters, the app also offers a full introduction of the digger team as well as three different mini-games that will keep your smallest kids busy for a while. The art style is really nice and it’s perfect for children of any age to get involved in, though older children might get a bit bored with the activities and the short story this app has to offer. The app weighs in at 172 MB, which is quite large, but worth it if you have young ones.

As briefly mentioned in the introduction of this review, the book app has quite a lot to offer. First of all, you will have access to a story called Joey’s Busy Day, which is fully interactive. Tons of objects on these pages are reacting to what your children will touch and all of it comes fully with sound and visual effects. Secondly, there is the JCB World part of the app. Here you can meet the team as well as play a small selection of mini-games. You can play Match the Items, where you will need to fill in gaps in a picture, you can play a card matching game like memory called Card Pairs and there are three different types of jigsaw puzzles to be solved.

The graphics of this app, which I can only describe as a digital activity app, are perfect. The design reminds me of the movie Cars, with all the different diggers having a personality and tons of things to say. The sound of the app is of the same quality, which makes clear why the app is as large as it is. Each and every digger has its own voice and sound effects are well implemented throughout the app. The overall presentation of the app is fantastic and really makes this world come alive.

The developer of this app really has outdone themselves as this must be one of the most comprehensive free apps I have seen in terms of interactive books. With three mini-games and a full story, this app should be a blind download for any loving parent and this app will keep your children busy for a while. The art style and sound of the app is top-notch and isn't beaten by any other app in the genre. The app is just over 170 MB, which is worth it completely.
