Sonic Jump Fever app review

Reviews

Introduction

Sonic Jump Fever for iPad and iPhone is the continuation of a very successful iOS game that was released by SEGA about a year or a year and a half ago. Not much has changed since then, except for the fact it is a lot faster and quicker in terms of pace. You will be jumping from platform to platform every time you play the game, though the game now also involves a combo mechanic. One of the weirdest choices that the developer has made with this game is that you play as Tails, one of Sonic’s sidekicks, and not as the blue hedgehog himself. He is only available via an in-app purchase. The app comes in just under 100 MB in size and is available in a ton of different languages.

Gameplay

As with the previous version of this game, you will be using the tilt mechanic to control the main character, which is, as mentioned before, the annoying little sidekick and not the title character of the game. While you do this, you will also be able to collect rings and other power-up items. If you collect enough rings, you will create a combo, and when this counter reaches the five mark, you will go into fever mode, where the character will basically fly up and you just have to steer him to collect rings. This will help you get a higher score and beat your friends in the leaderboards. Of course there are boss battles as well, just like the last game, where you need to take care of Doctor Eggman (or as real fans tend to call him, Doctor Robotnik) in one of his space ships.

Graphics and Sound

I don’t really think that compared to the previous game, the graphics or the sound have improved particularly. There might have been some changes to the explosion graphics, or a small tweak in the sound here and there, but overall there aren’t many improvements on these fronts in this exciting sequel. The game really needs to get it from the new gameplay element, but if this is enough to attract a bigger user base, we are yet to see.

Conclusion

If you liked the previous game, this one will definitely be on you would like on your iPad or iPhone. I do believe this game app is the better of the two, as it’s a sequel, but I don’t really know why. The fever mechanic is well implemented but it feels a bit random at times. It is great to see everyone from your friends list in the high scores though. The game is just under 100 MB, which is perfect for a game like this.
