Guitarist app review: your own iGuitar

Reviews

Introduction

Guitarist is a great iPhone and iPad app for those of you who would like to learn how to play guitar but either lack the time, money, or patience to actually learn the real thing. You’ll be able to strum and tap your way to pocket superstardom in no time with this cool little iGuitar at your fingertips!

The best iPad apps for learning guitar 2021

I’m always a little undecided when it comes to apps like this; the concept itself is very nicely executed and you can clearly see that the developer has at least some understanding of how a real guitar is supposed to be played.

On the other hand, I’m a musician and I really wish more people would replace games like Guitar Hero and similar iOS apps to actually pick up a real musical instrument and start jamming in real life! Either way, this is a quality app that I think you guys are going to have a lot of fun with.

21 Frets of Fire!

Making its way into the Music category of the App Store is this cool pint-sized iGuitar which features a 21-fret fret board and gives you the option to display between three and 10 frets on the screen at any one time so that you can really focus on refining certain phrases of music.

Far beyond being a crudely emulated guitar app, Guitarist provides two separate guitar tracks with individual effects. This is perfect for laying down a rhythm guitar track before screaming out a solo over it.

Save Your Jams

Guitarist also enables you to save all of your recordings so that you can share them with your friends, and you can bend notes, perform tapping, and strum, all with different gestures of your finger.

Best iphone and ipad apps

The only negative thing I have to say about this music app is that the guitar sound patches themselves are a little low in quality and realism; you shouldn’t expect too much in this regard but I’m still impressed by the playing techniques like tapping and bending that are supported.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Enjoy playing your very own pint-sized iGuitar
  • Features a 21-fret fret board
  • Choose to display between three and 10 frets on the screen at any one time
  • Record your jams and play them back at a later date
  • Record two separate guitar tracks with individual effects, perfect for rhythm plus lead
  • Bend notes virtually by literally dragging strings with your fingers
  • Tilt your iOS device to apply wah and whammy effects
  • Includes both acoustic and electric guitar sounds

Cons

  • Although this app has generally been quite well received by users on the iTunes description page, I would like to bring to your attention one user comment that I thought was rather well rounded:
  • “The good: You get 3 ways to play: tapping, strumming, and by entering tab. The ability to tab is unique tom this app and gives you a lot of flexibility once mastered.
  • The bad: Guitar samples are very poor quality and synth like. Definitely needs improvement in this area to compete with the other apps. I found myself wanting to export to midi and using another app to play the notes.”

Final Words

Guitarist is definitely one of the better guitar apps for iOS that I’ve come across over the past couple of years and I would definitely recommend checking it out on your iPhone and especially iPad as the larger display should really help with playing a little more fluidly.
