Touch Radar app review: detailed radar map imagery

Reviews

Introduction

Touch Radar is a solidly developed app for iPhone and iPad that has been designed to provide you with detailed radar map imagery, focusing largely on the continental United States while also providing some coverage of other locations around the world.

Some users have experienced confusion surrounding the exact coverage provided by this app so I would like to start off by pointing out that Touch Radar only provides more detailed, zoomable maps for the continental United States; coverage of Hawaii and Alaska are a little more limited.

High-Quality Zoomable Radar Maps for U.S.

Making a great addition to the Weather category of the App Store is Touch Radar, which is a very user-friendly designed to deliver detailed radar map imagery for the United States, fully zoomable for higher levels of detail.

The radar maps are all animated, and I really like the way you can still see everything fully animated even when you zoom in.

Broad Coverage for Australia, Canada, and UK

This weather app also provides broader radar views of Australia, Canada, the Caribbean, Europe, Hawaii, Mexico, and the UK, but you can’t zoom so the amount of detail is fairly superficial and might not be suitable for any of you who want something a little more comprehensive.

One feature in Touch Radar that I thought was pretty cool is that you can shake your iOS device to set your currently displayed location as the default, making it quicker and easier to access in the future.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Access detailed radar map imagery for the United States
  • Also provides broad radar views of Australia, Canada, the Caribbean, Europe, Hawaii, Mexico, and the UK
  • U.S. radar map views are fully zoomable for impressive amounts of detail
  • Shake your iOS device to set your currently displayed location as the default
  • Use on-screen arrows to quickly navigate to nearby radar stations
  • Zoomed maps retain full animation capability

Cons

  • To emphasize the above point about the limited coverage of Hawaii, it should also be noted that Alaska is not covered.

One user on the iTunes description page was particularly displeased by this fact: “Like so many things sold/given/developed for use by those of us in the US, two states always seem to be forgotten. Alaska and Hawaii are not available on this app. Not a big problem if you're not interested in these places, but when you live in one of these states and expect to see them included in "coverage of the US" it's disappointing!!!!!”

Final Words

Touch Radar for iPhone and iPad definitely does its job very effectively, although those of you living outside of the continental United States might want to opt for a weather utility more localized to your region or country.
