Solace & Courage app review

Reviews

Introduction

It's easy to find ourselves in stressful situations through the hustle and bustle of daily life, but it's equally easy to snap out of a downward spiral if you have a source of inspiration. Solace & Courage is an app for your iPhone and iPad that was designed to provide you with comfort, advice, and inspiration no matter what life situation you're facing.

What we have here is a collection of meticulously put together text messages along with photos that imparts helpful advice and wisdom to its users whenever they need it, wherever they need it.

You can find this app in the Lifestyle section of the App Store, where it is available completely free of charge. Let's take a look at its features.

User Interface & Layout

The app makes a fantastic first impression as you launch it, presenting you with an image of a beautiful sunset (or perhaps a sunrise - I can't be sure!) with the ocean as the foreground. This fades into the main menu where you can choose the category of text you'd like to view.

Categories include Choose For Me, which brings up a random selection of text for you, followed by Receive Encouragement, For Disappointment, For Sadness / Depression, For Anxiety / Fear, For irritation / Anger, and About Solace. The menu items are displayed in a visually pleasing text that definitely boosts the user interface score!

Whether you've just selected a category of text to appear or you have refreshed the page for new text, you'll find that the transition from one screen to the next is deliberately paced at a slow rate. This encourages slowness and stillness in the user as well. Just navigating through this app made me feel much calmer in the middle of a busy workday.

Get Inspired!

When you tap on your chosen category, you'll see an image of nature appear. Keep your eyes on it for a few seconds, and the text will appear. By default, the text will auto-scroll slowly, without challenging the user to rush through reading. One can also change up the settings for manual scrolling.

I'd like to note that the content of this app is a collection of original passages inspired by Eckhart Tolle, Torkom Saraydarian, J. Krishnamurti, and others. None of the writing in this app is religious in nature. Yet, it'll encourage you to take a break, look within, and overcome your limitations by providing you with some perspective.

Once the text has finished scrolling, you can choose to either meditate on it by tapping the “view image” button, or emailing it to a friend by tapping the action icon on the bottom right. Alternatively, choose another piece of text by tapping the refresh button on the bottom left.

I think that Solace & Courage is one of those apps that I'll be recommending to everyone who asks me about the best apps to download on their iPhone or iPad. It's simple, elegant, and leverages iOS technology for all the right reasons: to make the user's life more fulfilling and meaningful.
