Introduction

Team Umizoomi: Math Racer is a an iPhone and iPad app developed especially for kids aged five and under, which combines the fun of racing games with educational applications, particularly mathematical challenges.

You can find this app in the Education section of the App Store, where it can be purchased for $3.99. Let's take a closer look at the gameplay and functions.

Customize Your Racecar!

If you're the kind of person whose iPhone or iPad is choc-full of photos, videos, and other stuff taking up plenty of space, then you'd better start clearing up some space prior to installing Team Umizoomi: Math Racer, because it's quite a hefty app which takes up a good 132 MB of space.

This app has a really simple and straightforward user interface which is well-suited for the demographic it's aimed at, i.e. children aged five and under. Educational activities are craftily integrated into the racing game. There are hours of gameplay in this app as even after children finish the race, they can progress to the next difficulty level. There are a total of six levels in this app.

Race Around Umi City!

First, your child must pick out a car or design their own. Pre-set options include the UmiCar, Shark Car, Umi Taxi, or the Ninja Car. Once they've decided on a car, they can start zipping around Umi City where they must race around the track collecting coins and avoiding obstacles.

Like with any racing track, there are pit stops along the way and the player must stop at these in order to tune up the engine, clean up the windshield, or change the oil or tires. Here they will face pit stop challenges in the form of mathematical problems that are masked in pit stop activities.

The skills imparted include number identification, counting and enumeration, number comparisons, early addition and subtraction, and number sequencing. After each stage, your child will earn trophies as well as decorative car decals which they can show off as their accomplishments.

Final Words

I think that Team Umizoomi is one of the better racing games out there, which although is meant for kids under five, managed to entertain me a bit too well! You'll definitely want to get this app on your iPhone or iPad, whether you're a parent looking for a way to sneak in some math into your child's life, or a babysitter looking for a decent app for your “clients”!
