Empires of Sand app review : Kingdom Rush of Clans

Reviews

Introduction

Empires of Sand was a really nice surprise for me. Developer DIGITAL THINGS SL developed a game for both iPhone and iPad where it combines the concepts of one of my most hated games and the concept of one of my most loved games into one game. To my surprise the combination of the two genres, one being the base-building and online strategy genre in the form of Clash of Clans, and the other one being a tower defense game in the form of Kingdom Rush. The game basically takes the best of both worlds and merges this into a seamless experience with some minor mishaps on the way. The app weighs in at just under 100 MB; an Internet connection is required to play the game.

Gameplay

As mentioned, the game merges the gameplay from two games. As you can expect, the first part of the game, when you start it, is a base-building tutorial. This is nothing new, except that you need to build some defensive buildings straight away, as before you know it you will be attacked by hostile forces and your base will need to be defended. During these defensive parts of the gameplay, you can also send your troops out to kill off any straggling attackers. You can also attack other players that play the game and you will have to fight out a battle in real time. Lastly there is a campaign mode where you will have to fight to take back Egypt.

Graphics and Sound

The game has also taken another thing from the two different games which is the great attention to detail when it comes to the graphics of the game. The two different parts of the game blend in together well even though they use completely different camera angles. The characters are well-animated and fun to watch while the mythological creatures you can summon look impressive. The sound is also great to listen to and you will never feel the urge of turning it down. The overall presentation of the game app is definitely a reason to try it out.

Conclusion

As I mentioned in the introduction, I was really surprised about the way they blended two different gameplay styles. I am still not a big fan of the base-building and online gameplay of the game, but the tower defense part is done excellently and the campaign that you can play is really great. The app is completely free and is designed for both iPad and iPhone. The app is just under 100 MB, but you will have to be online to be able to use the app.
