Warbot Assault app review: a nice beat-'em-up

Introduction

Warbot Assault is yet another game by developer Kongregate, and like its other gaming brothers this game became famous as a free browser game on the Kongregate service. This game for iPad and iPhone puts you in the heavy metal boots of a huge robot and lets you beat the hell out of everything that comes in your way. With very easy, but quite deep gameplay, great boss battles, and a lot of upgrading possibilities, this game is awesome and on top of that it’s free to play as well! You can play as a ton of different characters as well, making this game really a game that is as good as the arcade beat-'em-ups from years ago. The game weighs in at just over 50 MB.

 The controls for the game are very simple: you only have to move your character left and right, and this is done using the same button you use as punch. If you want to jump you tap the top of the screen and if you want to do a low attack you touch the bottom of the screen. All in all it's pretty easy, but the depth of the gameplay comes with the different huge combos you can pull off. Also, there are tons of different playable robots, so you won’t get bored for a long time. A multi-player mode would be nice, so it’s a bummer this game doesn’t have one, but if you’re still dreaming of playing the great beat-'em-up games from yesteryear, this might be able to tickle your fancy.

The graphics used are of the cell-shaded variety, making the game look exactly like a cartoon. This graphical style has been used only since last generation and always comes out as really fresh and pretty fun. This allows the developers to keep the game to a small size as well, and lets them add a lot of fun to the game. The sound of the game is also over the top but spot on in terms of the fun factor. All in all, the presentation of this game just shouts FUN!
