Vocabulary and Grammar ! Language development and educational games is an iPad and iPhone app designed to help kids learn through fun vocabulary building activities that encourage proper grammar. This game is designed for young children up to about Grade One.

Mix and Match Sentence Builder

Vocabulary and Grammar ! Language is a fun game based learning app for kids to play. The first activity is an octopus where you search for objects to build your vocabulary. The second is a crab to work on sentence formation. The third and final is the clown fish to work on listening comprehension. The seek and find game is difficult. The child has to find objects hiding behind the objects in the scene. For example, a car might be hidden in the ship, and you have to clear off the windshield to find it. Initially when I found the car, I didn’t know what I was doing wrong, but you have to find the object, and then pop the bubble to indicate to the app that you’ve found it.

Another activity that is fun and odd at the same time is the sentence formation with the crabs. Each crab is presented with a picture to put into the sentence. You get three crabs, and each must sit on its color coded spot. For example, if you are given three grabs, two may be red, and one blue. You just move the crab to the colored spot and hit the check mark. Next, the fun sentence is animated. If for example you have a sausage, wash, and fork, you may make the animation be of a fork washing a sausage, or a sausage washing a fork. It’s quite entertaining.

Why It's For Younger Kids

Vocabulary and Grammar ! Language is a game for younger kids, because while there is vocabulary building and they learn how to build a sentence, the parts of the sentence are not named, and the words are not written. They are named several times to reinforce the learning, but this is as far as it goes.

Final Thoughts

Vocabulary and Grammar ! Language development and educational games iPad and iPhone app is a great learning tool for younger kids. If you are looking to assist children over Grade One, then this app is too simplistic, however, for new writers building sentences with pictures, and learning to put the action words in the blue spot, this app is helpful and does teach well. Overall, I would suggest this app as a starting point. There is only one level, so children may advance past the level in the app quickly; however, there is still the opportunity to learn through repetition and practice.
