Dog-A-Log app review: learn about dog breeds

Reviews

Introduction

If you want to have a reference guide to dog breeds that you can carry around with you wherever you go, then Dog-A-Log is an app that you might want to check out.

This iPhone and iPad app contains a large database of breeds of dogs, which has been compiled using the ultimate reference guide, Wikipedia.org. The information is assimilated in a format that is easily accessible to users of the iDevice.

Let's take a look at its features.

Dog Breed Information

Available for 99 cents, this app can be found in the Reference section of the App Store. It takes up a good 107 MB of space on your iPhone or iPad, but it is well worth it, because the app is self-contained, allowing you to use it whether you have an Internet connection or not.

When you launch the app, you'll find the entire list of dogs alphabetized in front of you that can be scrolled smoothly. At the top of the screen is a search box, which allows you to find the dog you are looking for with ease.

The Good and The Bad

When you tap on a dog breed you want to learn about, you'll be presented with a photo, or photos, at the top of the page with some information collated from Wikipedia, including the instructions on how to take care of that breed. Photos can be scrolled using the left and right icons leaving the information in place. When you tap on any of the pictures, you will be able to see them on a separate screen.

Unfortunately, there seem to be some major problems with the stability of this app. While the information and interface is neat and well-presented, the app tends to crash and generally bug out during use, taking you to the the launch page or even to the home screen. I hope the developers take note and fix this issue in a future update.

Final Words

Dog-A-Log has managed to condense information regarding dogs from Wikipedia and present it in an iPhone and iPad-friendly format, but it does leave something to be desired in terms of execution. I hope the developers will work on this and fix the issues.
