The whole idea here is to send messages to people in a non-traditional way. Instead you're sending these graphical text messages. How it works is that there is a background graphic or theme and you type your message right over top of it.
After you type in your message you can post it to Instagram so everyone on your friends list can see. Of course you can send them through iMessage as well, as mentioned above.

I really enjoyed that I was able to get creative with my messages and let the background graphics help me share my mood and current state of mind. With such a wide variety of themes/backgrounds to choose from it proved to be quite a lot of fun to play with. I can see how one would want to purchase all the in-app themes available as it gets a bit addictive.
