SUPER WHY! for iPad by PBS KIDS is a great game for your iPad that will help teach your child to read. This app was featured at the launch of the iPad 2 and won a Parents’ Choice Silver Award, so you know it’s good!

Your son or daughter will play along with their favorite characters from the TV series: Wonder Red, Alpha Pig, Super Why, and Princess Presto. All the while, your child will be practicing writing, spelling, rhyming, reading, and the alphabet.

With Wonder Red, players have to help her find the rhyming words that are missing from her basket. With Alpha Pig, players have to help him find his way home. Help him identify the letters he must follow in order to stay on the path. With Super Why, your child will have to choose the words that complete the sentence to fit the story. Finally, with Princess Pesto, your child will trace letters, identify letter sounds, and write words.

This app was developed as a partnership between PBS and Bean Creative. It’s designed specifically for kids three to six as they develop those skills needed to read.

SUPER WHY! for iPad was updated to Version 1.5 on April 6, 2011. The update fixed an audio volume issue. The current app has a total of 598 customer ratings with an average of 3.5 out of five stars. Feedback comments are mixed, with most people loving it but some complaining about slow load times.

I downloaded this app to my iPad and my four year old daughter quite likes it. She’s most of the way through junior kindergarten and has learned the basics, and this app seems to really help with her learning how to read. Check it out.
