Kingdom Rush Frontiers app review: exotic lands and mischievous monsters

Reviews

Kingdom Rush Frontiers

Price: $2.99

Kingdom Rush Frontiers by Ironhide Game Studio is every tower-defense fan’s dream come true, with a huge selection of environments, items, spells, and enemies to keep you busy. It was released in early-June of 2013. The game is rated for kids nine and up due to infrequent or mild cartoon or fantasy violence. The app requires 169MB of free space so make sure you have a WiFi connection when you try to download it.

There are a variety of heroes to play with and a ton of different features and abilities to help you fend off the evil forces attempting to infiltrate your defenses.

User Experience
This game plays very nicely; the graphics are simplistic but they have a soft cutesy feel to them which definitely adds some charm and character to the game.

There are loads of fun things to do in Kingdom Rush Frontiers and the game play is very easy to pick up, so you’ll be blasting enemies and navigating strange new lands in no time at all.

Features
This app several upgrades you can use on your towers, as well as tower abilities such as assassins and pestilence clouds that will help you defend against more than 40 different enemies.

Each stage presents its own challenges and features, and you can choose from a selection of special heroes. Watch out for the mighty boss battles as they will truly test your skills, and check out the 70 different achievements available, some of which will only be accessible to the very greatest of heroes.

Furthermore, you can choose among three difficulty levels, making Kingdom Rush Frontiers ideal for all ability levels.

In-App Purchases
There are various in-app purchases available in Kingdom Rush Frontiers, including Hero Dragon, Hero Grawl, Handfull of gems Chest of gems, Hero Captain Blackthorne, Hero Dierdre, and more. All are priced between $2.99 and $9.99.

Customer Ratings and Feedback Comments
Kingdom Rush Frontiers currently has 818 customer ratings with an average rating of 4.5 out of five stars. Feedback comments have been fantastic regarding the app itself, but there have been a lot of complaints around the price of the in-app purchases, which are almost a necessity for progressing in the game and fully enjoying it.

Personal Comments by Reviewer
I remember some of the first tower-defense flash games, and it’s both amazing and amusing to see how far they’ve come. I like the graphical style in this game because it doesn’t try to be anything it isn’t; it is just plain old silly fun with loads of crazy stuff happening onscreen at once.

I never like to complain about having to pay for in-app purchases because I think developers have every right to add them in, but for a $2.99 app I would like to see somewhat of a reduction on the price of the extra features, especially the additional heroes beyond the first three that come with the app.

Pros

  • Loads of upgrades, abilities, monsters, heroes, and environments to keep things interesting
  • Cute graphics to appeal to a variety of ages
  • Different difficulty levels to choose from

Cons

  • Additional content beyond the initial purchase appears to be quite expensive, which may put some people off

For: iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad with iOS 4.2 or later. Kingdom Rush Frontiers  is optimized for iPhone 5.
