Snapchat by Snapchat, Inc. is a messaging app that allows you to send self-generated photos to a person and have them disappear from the device for up to 10 seconds before disappearing. The app was designed in such a way that “fun” photos could be shared without the chance of having them be made public.
Users can put a time limit on each picture they want to send. The recipient can only view it for that length of time before it is automatically erased from the person’s iOS device. This doesn’t stop people from taking a screenshot of the image, however, so users need to be aware of this risk. The app will tell a user if the recipient took a screenshot of the image.
Users can share images with anyone’s username they know. This may make things tricky when people share their usernames in forums or other social media platforms. A downside of the app is that teens may see this app as being encouraged to send inappropriate content under the belief that it won’t be shared.
Recent estimates say that about 5 million Snapchat photos are shared each day.
Snapchat has three major safety features to protect your photos: you can set the timer to as little as one second for the person to view the photo; it is often difficult for people to take a screenshot in the little time they have to prepare; and the app will tell the sender if there was a screenshot taken. Finally, any photos taken within Snapchat are not automatically saved to a person’s Camera Roll.
The app was updated to Version 3.1.0 on July 13, 2012. The update added password recovery, and ultra-fast camera, and drawing features. The app is rated for kids 12 and up. Snapchat currently has 4091 reviews with an average of 3.5 out of five stars.
