Keywars app review: test your typing speed against the world

Reviews

Introduction

Do you think of yourself as a pretty decent typist? When you tap on that phone or tablet do you leave a blaze of fire in your wake? If so, you just might enjoy Keywars. This is a really fun app that pits your typing skills against other IOS users from around the world. The intent of this app, besides having a little fun, is to find the fastest keyboard available for IOS. It’s definitely a little different from your average app, but that’s a good thing. This is a free app and it’s compatible with the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch.

Back when I first started learning to type smartphones and tablets hadn’t even been conceived yet; electronic typewriters and word processors with little tiny screens were the tools of choice and we actually took classes to learn how to use them. In today’s world kids are typing on tablets long before they enter school and typing skills are just something they develop naturally. In a society where just about everybody is an expert typist a game that pits your typing skills against everyone else seems like a very natural idea so it’s a wonder no one thought of this before.

This game really is a lot of fun. My only criticism is the lack of any explanation in the app about what the purpose of it is and how you actually play the game. If you visit the download page in the App Store you’ll get a pretty good idea about what it’s all about but not in the app itself. This seems a little strange. On the plus side you don’t have to contend with any ads in this one and there is Game Center integration as well. This app will require 11.7 MB of free space on your iOS device.

How to Play

There are three modes of gameplay: Reference Mode, Isispmbloe Mdoe, and Branded Mode. The most basic setting is probably Branded Mode; in this mode you simply try to type a phrase as fast as you can. Every time you play again you’re typing the same phrase and it doesn’t change so eventually you’ll be typing from memory rather than just reading it off the screen. This will allow you to get faster each time you start over. The idea is to complete the phrase as fast as you can with as few errors as possible. If you achieve a positive score of any kind your score will be uploaded to the Keywar global rankings. The quicker you are the higher your score and you will receive achievements for different point levels so there’s always something to aim for.

The other two game modes are a little more difficult. In Reference Mode the phrase changes every time you play so you can’t rely on your memory, only your own typing skills. It’s definitely more challenging.  In Isispmbloe Mdoe the words are all jumbled as you might have guessed which is obviously going to make gameplay that much more difficult, however this mode is locked in the free version and must be purchased from the App Store as an in-app purchase. Overall the game is a lot of fun and glitch free (you can’t blame it for your own typos).
