Challenge Your Mind

Memory games of one sort or another have been popular for decades. It’s a particularly effective way for us to help our kids learn different patterns and how to quickly recall information and there’s a good reason for their popularity; they’re highly effective. Children exposed to these sorts of games tend to learn more quickly and retain information better so why shouldn’t it work for adults as well? The developers of Memocolor - Mental Workout Game are confident that it will work for adults which is why they recommend playing at least three games a day to keep your mind sharp.

The best iPad apps for teachers

At first this game seemed a little too simplistic to me but it turns out that’s the real beauty of it. Sharpening your mind doesn’t need to be complicated and that’s why this app works; most of all it’s addictive. As an added bonus there are no ads at all in the app and no in-app purchases and that’s a pretty sweet deal. The only thing the developer asks for in return is that you rate their app in the App Store, which which seems a small price to pay. This is a small app, requiring only 1.1 MB of free space on your iOS device.

How it Works

The first time you open the app you’ll see six basic squares. The first square will take you to the game right away; there’s also a settings tab, a sharing tab, a game instructions tab, a leaderboard, and a tab that will take you to the App Store to rate the app. What I like about this home screen is its simple layout: the icons are self-explanatory and color coordinated. It’s simple but effective. The instructions actually walk you through a test game so there’s no guess work when you play an actual game which really reduces the learning curve.

When you tap on the play icon to start a game you’ll be asked to choose from six different modes. At first only the very easy and easy categories are unlocked, but as you progress through the game you’ll unlock more levels. Gameplay is pretty straightforward. You’ll be presented with a group of multiple colored squares in a certain pattern. The idea is to remember the pattern for later. Once you think you have the pattern memorized click on the next arrow to scramble the squares and tap on the squares to change their colors back until you’ve got the pattern back to what was presented to you. If your memory is correct, you’ll collect points and you can move on to the next level; otherwise you’ll have to start again. It really does help to sharpen your focus. Sometimes a game doesn’t have to be complicated to capture your interest and Memocolor - Mental Workout Game does a great job of making a simple game interesting. The social sharing capability and Game Center integration round this one out nicely.
