Introduction

Crossword puzzle apps may be one of the most common types of app you’ll find in the App Store. In a category as competitive as this one it pays to stand out from the crowd. Let’s face it: if you’ve seen one crossword puzzle you’ve seen them all, right? Well believe it or not that isn’t exactly true. Letters - Guess The Word is a crossword puzzle app with a bit of a twist which makes it definitely worth a look. It’s a little more than just the standard crossword puzzle. A Crossword with a Twist

Crossword puzzles are a great way to pass the time if you’re bored, but they don’t usually stray too far from the same standard form: you’re presented with a clue and your job is to guess what the word is and fill in the blanks on the crossword. The developers of Letters - Guess the Word have come up with a completely new twist on the standard crossword puzzle. In this app all of the words are filled in except one and it’s your job to figure out that one last word.

This is generally a fun little time waster but it does have a couple of drawbacks. There are banner ads at the bottom of the page, although they’re not very big. What was more concerning was the app’s tendency to freeze on occasion. This seemed to happen most often when I put my device down for a few minutes to do other things. It’s a little frustrating to have to exit out of an app and re-enter it to get it working. On the positive side the app will always start at the same part of the puzzle you left off at, so you won’t lose your place when this happens. This app will require 16.8 MB of free space on your iOS device.

How to Play

What makes Letters - Guess the Word unique is the way that puzzle clues are presented. As mentioned all of the other words in the puzzle are filled out except one and these other words are actually the clues that will help you figure out what the remaining word is. At the bottom of the puzzle is a series of blank spaces that you fill in by selecting from the jumble of letters underneath this section. You have to select the letters in the correct order so there’s no cheating here.  The process of selecting words kind of gives the game a similar look to Scrabble or Wheel of Fortune. It’s definitely a lot of fun.

Each puzzle has 10 different words to complete before you can continue on. There are six different puzzles in all, but you have to complete each one before you can unlock the next one. If you get completely stuck you can email a copy of your puzzle to a friend to enlist their help. You can also use coins you collect by solving each word to pay to reveal a letter or the entire word if you have enough coins and you want to take all the fun out of it! You can also get more coins through an in-app purchase if you like.
