Decoy app review: protect your private photos from prying eyes

Reviews

Introduction

It’s fairly common to have a photo that we don’t want others to see. It may be an intimate picture, or a private document that contains sensitive information you don’t want to share with the wrong person. Normally you would hesitate to send this kind of picture via text or email, but with the Decoy app you can send the picture to whoever you like without having to worry about it falling into the wrong hands. It’s an app that can improve your peace of mind and help you sleep better at night if you worry about such things. This is a free app and it’s compatible with the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch.

Protecting Your Pictures

There are dozens of apps with the express purpose of keeping your photos safe from unwanted viewers: some of these are great and some of them are far too complicated. As important as it is to protect your privacy, you don’t want to over-complicate your life. You want an app that’s easy to use and not time consuming. Decoy is the perfect solution, and with its unique use of a decoy photo it does a great job of hiding pictures you want to keep safe in plain view.

The best iPad apps for password managers

What really stands out about this app is its simplicity, and if you’re not sure of anything there’s a great set of instructions which explains everything quite well. The only real drawback with this app is that it does contain ads. Along the bottom of the app is a large banner ad which is a little distracting, and you will have to put up with frequent pop-ups attempting to get you to upgrade to the premium version of the app. This app will require 15.7 MB of available space on your iOS device.

How it Works

When you open the app you’ll see two main options: Take a Picture and Unlock Picture. They do exactly what you’d think they do. If you tap on take a picture you can take your picture of the item you want to remain private from within the app, the pp will then prompt you to take another picture to use as a decoy. This picture can be whatever you want: a picture of your wall or a picture of your dog will do just fine. Once you’ve created your decoy photo you can share it with others from within the app, but they will need to know the password and they’ll also have to have the app on their own device.

To open a picture created with Decoy you’ll need to use the Unlock Picture option on the main screen. From within the app you simply find the picture you want to unlock in your photo library and type in your password. If you ever need help with understanding the process you can always access the help section from the settings menu in the top right corner.
