Parsecs app review: a classic arcade style space adventure game

Reviews

Introduction

If you’re like me you’re always looking for a great little game to play while you’re waiting for a doctor’s or dentist appointment. There is no doubt that sitting waiting for a doctor can be an irritating process – nine times out of ten your appointment never starts on time. Fortunately, these days we have our smart phones to keep us company while we’re waiting. I prefer simple games while waiting for the doctor, ones that I won’t be upset with ending if my name is suddenly announced. The best games for this type of scenario are those classic arcade style games and Parsecs is a game that definitely fits the mold. This is a free app and it’s compatible with the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch.

Become a Veteran Spaceship Pilot

Depending on your age you might remember a classic game called Asteroids – in this game your mission was to guide your spaceship through dangerous asteroid fields while avoiding enemy spaceships and using your laser weapons when necessary. It was a simple game, with some very basic graphics, but that simple game play was a big part of its appeal. You didn’t need to go through a half hour training session just to learn how to use the game. This is the kind of game I want to play at the doctor’s office and Parsecs reminds me very much of those early Asteroid games. This is a great little time waster that will keep your mind off how long you’ve been sitting in the waiting room.

One thing I really liked about this app is that the developer didn’t feel the need to bombard you with ads. You can play the game without any banner ads cluttering up the screen and you don’t have to worry about pop-ups distracting you in the middle of the game. Once you hit play you get to play your game completely hassle-free. The game feature some simple but cool space themed graphics, the sound effects are pretty good, and the space-age music fits well with the game’s theme. It also features full Game Center integration so that you can compare your high score against your friends and family. This app will require 123 MB of available space on your iOS device.

How to Play

It may take you a couple of attempts before you’ll figure out how the game works – unfortunately they don’t really provide you with any instructions so you’ll have to learn by the trial and error method. It’s actually pretty simple, your spaceship starts from the bottom of the screen and the objective is to get it to the top of the screen, every time you do this you receive another parsec. Parsecs are how the game keeps score. As simple as that may sound, you will have to contend with planets and asteroids in your way along the way. In order to avoid these obstacles you simply have to swipe the screen in the direction you wish your spaceship to move. It actually reacts quite well to your touch making this game quite a lot of fun.

Final Words

Parsecs is a reminiscient of other iPhone arcade games. You’ll need to keep your wits about you as you try to guide your spaceship to the top of the screen. There are lots of planets and asteroids in your way and you’ll have to be on your toes. This is a game that can definitely help you pass the time in the waiting room.
