Scrubby app review: a fun retro style video game for the whole family

Reviews

Introduction

In the 80s and early 90s video games were simple and fun to play – it doesn’t mean video games today aren’t great, it’s just fun to remember a simpler time. Some of the most popular games of the 1980s included Pac-Man, Centipede, Asteroids, and Space Invaders and all of these games have one thing in common – they featured simple and intuitive gameplay. The graphics were basic, yet fun, and it only took a couple of seconds to learn how to play the game. They weren’t easy to master – they just weren’t difficult to get the basic hang of things. Scrubby is a retro style video game made in the same mold. This game is a lot of fun to play, with basic graphics and simple rules. Scrubby is available for purchase from the App Store at a cost of $0.99 and its compatible with the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch.

Clean Away the Germs

The App Store is full of great retro style video games, but most of these are clones of other popular games from the past. They don’t introduce anything new or make any attempts to reinvent the wheel. Don’t get me wrong, these apps are great fun, but it’s nice to find a game that not only reproduces that fun retro style of videogame we loved in the 80s and 90s, but also introduces some new and innovative concepts. Scrubby is this type of game – the idea of collecting bubbles and cleaning germs from the sink is a novel concept. All of the best video games from the 80s and early 90s introduced unique and innovative ideas.

Scrubby is not only a great retro style video game, the developers have also thought of the little things like providing a great set of instructions. This game not only explains to you how the game is played, but it actually explains to you what each character in the game’s purpose is. Many games provide instructions, but they don’t go into this level of detail in most cases. Once you’ve made the initial purchase of the game you don’t have to worry about any further in-app purchases and there are no ads in this game. This app will require 46.6 MB of available space on your iOS device.

How to Play

What makes this game fun is the combination of fun, cartoon styled, 8-bit pixelated graphics that really do harken back to those games of the 80s and early 90s. The rules are simple, you control the character named scrubby whose sole purpose is to collect the bubbles from the sink and clean the germs. To do this you simply swipe scrubby in the direction of the bubbles or germs and once he comes in contact with them he will collect them. You have to be careful though, because scrubby can only collect germs that are either the same size as him or smaller than him. If you come in contact with germs that are larger than him it’s game over.

Once scrubby has collected all of the bubbles and germs in the sink you can then move towards the drain to clear the level. If scrubby collects all of the bubbles and germs in the sink before time expires you’ll collect two stars and you can then pass down the sink, if scrubby only collects all of the bubbles you can still finish the level by going down the sink but you’ll only collect one star. If you can collect all of the bubbles and all of the germs and still have five seconds left on the clock you’ll get three stars. It’s a simple game to play and the rules are very simple as well, but it’s definitely a lot of fun.
