Introduction

I freely admit that I find yoga to be one of the most difficult forms of exercise that you can possibly put your body through – I tried it once and that was enough for me. Don’t get me wrong, I know for a fact it’s one of the best ways to achieve overall physical health. I’m just not flexible enough. I have friends who build their whole lives around yoga and they are some of the healthiest people I know. So, if you’re a little more flexible than me, then by all means I recommend giving it a try.  Gotta Joga is one of the best free apps you’ll find in the App Store for living the yoga lifestyle. This app is compatible with the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch.

The Developer’s Story

Gotta Joga is the brainchild of a group of Finnish ladies that started getting together for morning yoga meetings while living in southern Germany. These women loved yoga and soon realized that they wanted to be able to live the yoga lifestyle wherever and whenever they desired. They decided the best way to do this was to create their own app and share it with the world. That was back in 2012 and in 2016, that app is a reality.

Most apps are just that – apps. What makes Gotta Joga a little different is that the Finnish founders of the app have developed their own community that users can become a part of. Not only is there an app, they also have a great blog which explores the yoga lifestyle on an ongoing basis. They also have a great Instagram account where they share some of their favorite yoga pictures.

Get Your Yoga On

There are plenty of new age meditation and yoga apps in the App Store, but what really makes this one different is what we’ve already touched on above. This is more than just an app, it’s a community. So, while the actual yoga poses and exercises may be no better or worse than any other app, by asking you to immerse yourself in their own community, they’ve created a better user experience that really works. Simply put, this is one of the most exciting approaches to a yoga app I’ve ever seen.

While the app is free, you’re very limited in what you can do with the free portion. If you truly want to get the full yoga experience, you will have to purchase some, or all, of the in-app purchase packages available. The packages range in price from $2.99 to $9.99 for all packages to be unlocked. It’s still a lot cheaper than attending actual yoga classes. This app will require 78.9 MB of available space on your iOS device.

The app starts with a nice walk through that explains how to use the app and how it can benefit you. It’s actually quite a simple design with a couple of sample videos at the top of the app and then three different sections that you can access in the bottom portion of the app. There’s a practice yoga section, a learn poses section, and an info section.

The practice yoga section is really the meat and potatoes of the app. Here, you’ll find videos divided into three different sections: morning, day, and evening. Essentially, there are different yoga exercises and poses that are recommended for different times of day. So, if it was morning for example, you would tap on the morning tab at the top of the screen and select the video that you want to try. In each section there’s only one short five minute video available for free – the rest must be purchased as an in-app purchase.

The second section of the app is where you can learn all of the different yoga poses. Again, there are only a couple that you can access for free and the rest have to be purchased through in-app purchases. To access any of the videos, you just simply tap on it and then download it to your device. Once it’s been downloaded, you can play it any time that you like. Each video is accompanied by a narrative that explains the correct way to perform the pose.

One final feature of this app that has to be addressed is something they call Your Yoga Tree. Every time you practice your yoga and complete an exercise, a branch is added to the tree to signify your progress. It’s a rather unique concept and a good way to motivate people. You can also share the tree with your friends in order to inspire them as well.

Meditate On This

While I wish that Gotta Joga was completely free, I still like this app a lot. They have some great videos with some good monologues that explain how to do the different poses, but you can find this in a lot of other yoga apps as well. What really stood out for me was the unique Yoga Tree provided as a motivational tool and the overall community concept that the developers have created. All of these things come together to create an app that’s one of the best yoga apps available in the App Store.
