Swingdo app review: A user friendly to-do app for the iPhone and iPad

Reviews

Introduction

There are so many to-do apps in the App Store that it’s hard to keep track, but one thing that most of these apps have in common is that they’re usually very basic and not necessarily user-friendly or they’re far too complicated for the average user to be bothered with. While, I’ve tried out some of these apps, I’ve always ended up going back to the reminder and notes apps that are built right into the iDevice. The reason being is that I’m looking for ease-of-use and simplicity, but I also want something that’s intuitive and I can actually use.

The best iPhone apps for task management

While I have been disappointed with most apps that come out of the App Store in this category, there is one app recently made available that does seem to show some promise. This app is called Swingdo and the great thing about the app is that it can easily integrate with apps you’re already using. Most other apps in this category, which are half decent unfortunately, aren’t free. However, this one is and that gives it a big advantage. It’s also compatible with the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch.

Getting Started

Once you’ve added at least one account to the Swingdo app, you’ll be guided through a brief introduction that explains how the app works and what it can do for you. This introduction includes graphic illustrations as well as excellent explanations that make things pretty clear. It never ceases to amaze me the amount of apps in the iTunes store that don’t include something like this.

If there are times when you may have questions on how to do something from within the app, Swingdo’s creators have tried to make it as easy as possible for you to find your answers. At the top of the app you can simply tap on the question mark icon to get quick access to some simple answers, or you can go to the settings icon in the top left corner and tap on the FAQ link to gain access to some much more detailed answers.

Adding a Task

When you’re ready to add your first to do item to the list you’re likely going to be surprised at the ease with which you can do this. All you have to do to add an item is tap on the plus icon in the bottom right corner, give your task a name and it will automatically be saved in your list. If you want to refine the details of your to do item simply tap on it in your list and adjust its settings by tapping on the edit icon in the bottom right corner. You can adjust the date, add a location, enter a duration for the activity, and you can even add a memo if you like as well. When you’re done you simply tap on the close icon and the updated information will be added to the item in your list.

Simple and Intuitive UI

The reason I really liked this app was because of its simple and intuitive nature. Each item is presented in a well-organized list that includes some basic information that you quickly look over and each item is also clearly separated from the next. The thing I really don’t like about the notes app that comes with your iPhone is that things can look a little cluttered – that’s not a problem with this app at all.

Practical and Manageable Features

In order to receive a reminder when a to-do list item is coming up, you’ll have to allow notifications in your iOS settings. The app does prompt you to do this when you first run it, but if you don’t do this right away you can always change it later in your settings. When the reminders are activated, they’re seamlessly integrated with your iOS system and pop up when it’s appropriate.

The app automatically prioritizes and schedules notifications from your to do list as long as you’ve allowed notifications on your device. It doesn’t really determine which items are more important than others – it simply notifies you when any item comes due. One thing I would like to see automatically included in this app that isn’t at the moment is for the app to automatically place items in the list in order of when they’re coming due. At the moment it simply adds a new item to the bottom of your list.

When you’re ready to remove an item from your list because it’s completed you can simply swipe to the left and tap on delete, or you can swipe right and the item will be saved in your done list in case you want to bring it back to life at some time in the future. To move an item that’s been placed in your done list back into your to do list you simply tap on the done icon in the top right corner and then tap on the arrow that’s located on the item you wish to add back to the list and it will return to your main list.

Calendar Events and Mail Tasks

If you use the optional web app as well on your PC you can integrate your to do task between different devices. That means if you add or delete an item on your PC you can login and sync your changes with your iPhone app as well. This type of multiple device integration is essential to avoid duplication across devices and a welcome addition.

Swingdo is an app that clearly demonstrates that getting organized doesn’t have to be a complicated task. The beauty of this app is that it keeps things simple, easy to use and it presents them in a way that’s user-friendly and intuitive. If you’re the type of person that has difficulty keeping on top of things then you’ll definitely want to add this app to your iPhone or iPad. It's definitely becoming a mainstay on my iDevice.
