UMSkinCheck

Price: Free

UMSkinCheck by The University of Michigan guides you through a self-examination of your skin to help detect warning signs of skin cancer.

This app is meant to help you perform a self-examination of your skin if you have worries about skin cancer. Even if you don't have any worries it's still great to do so that if a problem should arise you can catch it early.

You will be able to perform the self-exam and then save a full body photographic library of pictures. This is a great way to keep track of skin lesions, moles, and areas on your skin that appear to have growths.

The information literature and videos are meant to give you details on skin cancer and there is a melanoma risk calculator.

The purpose of a self-examination is to identify and examine suspicious looking areas on your skin that may be skin cancer or is pre-cancerous and still very important to have looked at.

While this app can be very helpful and handy when it comes to keeping track of areas of your skin that may be suspicious it in no means replaces a visit to the doctor. As well those who are at high risk of developing skin cancer are encouraged to have photographic surveys done by a professional photographer.

UMSkinCheck was updated on Dec. 2, 2012 and currently has 30 customer ratings with an average rating of four and a half out of five stars.

I thought this was a great additional tool on top of seeing a doctor regularly to help you keep track of your skin and make sure nothing goes unnoticed. The fact that you could take and store pictures was a key element here.

For: iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad with iOS 4.3 or later
