Warhammer Quest app review: play this classic dungeon crawler on iOS

Reviews

Warhammer Quest

Price: $4.99

Warhammer Quest by Rodeo Games brings you the first Warhammer game to the iOS platform. It was released at the end of May, 2013. The app is available in English, French, Spanish, Italian, and German, and is rated for kids nine and older. It requires 731MB of storage space.

User Experience
Gamers who have played Warhammer board games will love that the game has now come to the iOS platform, and it will also appeal to casual gamers too. You’ll lead a band of characters through dungeons filled with nasty creatures like trolls, orcs, and goblins.

This isn’t just a digital version of the board game, though: it will give you an all-new experience. You’ll be sent into dungeon after dungeon, each filled with different enemies.

You get a top-down view, and you double-tap to where you want your character to move. Enemies will highlight different colors according to their action or activity.

You’ll get a dwarf, wizard, archer, and soldier to play, each with unique traits. You get to use all of the characters in each turn. Use the best of your strategy to use items, sequence your attacks, and position your characters to your best advantage.

Features
The game offers iCloud support, over 25 hours of gameplay if you include the expansion, support for Retina graphics, and you get to travel across the Warhammer world. You’ll experience intense battles with some really bad guys, and you can buy three additional players with an in-app purchase. There’s also a huge expansion available via an in-app purchase.

In-App Purchases
You can buy a Warrior Priest, Archmage, or Dwarf Trollslayer to play, each for $2.99.

Update Info
Warhammer Quest is currently running on Version 1.02.

Customer Ratings and Feedback Comments
The app has 1141 customer ratings with an average of 4.5 out of five stars. Feedback comments are filled with suggestions and criticisms, although with that many 4.5 star ratings, it can’t be all that bad. Most of the comments have to do with the expensive in-app purchases and the fact that you can actually have gold that you bought with real money stolen at the next town or gambled away seems kind of ridiculous.

Personal Comments by Reviewer
I guess I’m just one of those people who just doesn’t enjoy this game. For a game that you have to pay $5 for to start with, then another $3 for each additional character, and then the fact that you can lose purchased gold through no fault of your own, it just seems like too much. Are the developers more interested in putting out a good game or ripping people off? It seems like the latter is the more appropriate answer.

I also hate the way you have to rotate the device to see the character sheets.

Pros

  • Nice art design
  • Huge catalog of RPG elements
  • Four characters to play in each turn
  • Easy to operate

Cons

  • The game doesn’t really explain how to play
  • Might be a bit of a turnoff to hardcore gamers
  • Really similar to the Hunters series
  • Repetition how the battles play out
  • Isn’t really exactly like Warhammer the board game
  • Is a single-player game only
  • Expensive IAPs
  • Coins you buy with real money can be stolen or gambled away outside of your control within minutes of buying it

For: iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, iPod touch (3rd generation), iPod touch (4th generation), iPod touch (5th generation) and iPad with iOS 6.0 or later. Warhammer Quest is optimized for iPhone 5.
