LaLa Lunchbox app review: makes packing a healthy lunch fun

Reviews

LaLa Lunchbox

Price: $0.99

LaLa Lunchbox by LaLa Lunchbox, LLC is a great app that helps parents (and kids) pack a nutritious lunch. It’s fun and removes the stress of trying to figure out what to feed your kids. It was updated on May 30, 2013 and is available in English only. It requires only 8.6MB of storage space.

User Experience
This app basically makes having a lunchbox a game. It’s meant to be played by parents and kids together.

You start out by making a virtual lunchbox. You choose a monster and color for your lunchbox. Once you’ve got your lunchbox the way you want it, you need to start planning some lunches, so tap on the lunchbox and swipe to pick the day you want to plan your lunch.

You’ll see the lunchbox divided into Snacks, Proteins, Veggies, and Fruits. Along the bottom of the screen is the monster you picked. Tap on the food item to pack and it will show up at the bottom of your screen. Swipe to see all the choices in each food group. Pick the food item to place in the lunchbox and drag it into the monster’s mouth – then the food item will show up in the lunchbox. Continue until the lunch is all packed.

After you’ve packed one day’s worth you can either move on and do more days, even in other weeks.

You can add your own foods and items to the preset lists, or remove foods from the lists that don’t apply to you.

After a food is added to the lunchbox, the item will appear on a grocery list so you will know what to get from the store when it’s time to make a trip.

Features
The game touts itself as being empowering for kids, a money saver, and a time saver. Kids will love the app because it lets them have a say as to what’s in their lunch, and parents like it because it gets their kids to eat food that is healthy and delicious.

Other features include the always-updated grocery shopping list, one-click sync, customizable lunchboxes, a huge library of different foods, and the ability to share via social media.

Update Info
LaLa Lunchbox is currently running on Version 2.3. The update added the ability to sync your grocery list with LaLa Breakfast, another app from LaLa Lunchbox, LLC.

Customer Ratings and Feedback Comments
There are not enough ratings for iTunes to display an average for the current version, but the app has 50 customer ratings overall, with an average of 4.5 out of five stars. The one feedback comment is positive.

Personal Comments by Reviewer
I’m not sure that this app would actually make my daughter more likely to eat her lunch. Sure, she would have fun packing her virtual lunchbox, but the issue is whether she is distracted at lunchtime, has enough time to eat, or actually feels like eating. She might be more likely to eat it if she chooses each item herself, but she already has a lot of say as to what goes in there, so I’m not sure that it would make a big difference. Also, regarding the sharing of the lunchbox contents on social media platforms: my five year old doesn’t exactly have a Twitter or Facebook account and I doubt that any self-respecting 14 year old is going to a) play with this app or b) announce to his or her friends what’s in the lunchbox.

Pros

  • Fun game
  • Gives kids a chance to have some input as to what goes in their lunch

Cons

  • May or may not actually encourage kids to eat their lunch

For: iPhone, iPod touch, iPad with iOS 5.0 or later. LaLa Lunchbox is optimized for iPhone 5.
