How to Defeat the Bigger, Stronger Opponent Series 1, Volume 1

Price: $19.99

How to Defeat the Bigger, Stronger Opponent Series 1, Volume 1: 'Essential Drills and Controlling the Grip' with Emily Kwok and Stephan Kesting by Grapplearts Enterprises Inc. is the first of five apps where you will learn how to take on a bigger, stronger opponent using Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. The app was released in early June 2013 and requires 516MB of storage space. It’s rated for kids nine and up due to iTunes’ rating for violence but if your child is learning martial arts this is probably okay: use your discretion.

User Experience
You’ll use this app to learn how to stop a bigger opponent from totally controlling you in a fight. You’ll learn from Emily and Stephen how to use a combination of defensive and offensive gripfighting. The gripfighting techniques you’ll learn apply to both ground fighting and standing work, so you can use any technique in either position.

Emily explains the importance of gripfighting really well. The app is about 50 percent drills, which some people might not like, but it’s imperative to practice these skills that you will learn.

Emily and Stephen work together really well to bring across a cohesive training app.

Features
You get drills for both solo and partner work, two BJJ black belts to show you how to do the moves, drills to strengthen you and get you ready for training, and a bonus “The Roadmap for Brazilian Jiu-Jitzu” book for free. You get one hour and 39 minutes of video instruction, complete menus, and the ability to create a list of your favorite techniques and drills. You can download it all at once so you don’t have to always have an Internet connection to use the app.

Customer Ratings and Feedback Comments
How to Defeat the Bigger, Stronger Opponent Series 1, Volume 1 currently does not have enough customer ratings for iTunes to display an average. The one feedback comment is positive overall.

Personal Comments by Reviewer
I’m no practitioner of martial arts in general or BJJ in particular, but this looks like a well-rounded app to help teach anyone defend him- or herself against a larger attacker. The videos are well-done, professionally recorded, and the instructors are quite good.
