'Flapcraft' by Award Winning Pixelmator Team is a Crashing Good Game

Flapcraft by Pixelmator is an amazing game with beautiful comic art and a solid soundtrack based on a simple idea: Vikings doing tricks on wooden logs. This is the Pixelmator team's first foray into gaming and the result is impressive. The company incepted in 2007 with two brothers intent on developing an image editing program for the Mac OS X system and the result was Pixelmator, a Mac 2011 Apple Design Award winner. So why did an award winning image editing company decide to produce an iOS game app about Vikings doing tricks on wooden logs? According to their weblog, the Pixelmator team developed the game as a test for their upcoming Pixelmator 2.0. and don't have any intention on producing more games. Flapcraft’s story is based on Viking tradition that in times of peace in order to keep the Norse fighting spirit strong, the bravest Vikings take to hopping off ramps with wooden logs and perform aerial tricks. The game starts with a tutorial placing an unnamed Viking with rugged good looks at your finger tapping disposal. One tap will launch the brave warrior into the air where his flight his controlled by tilting your iDevice left or right. You receive different objectives for each launch based on landing, flight speed, aerial tricks, and reaching a set distance. Completing an objective grants you access to the next level graduating from from easy mode to attempting to perform hardcore Viking tricks. Along the way you upgrade your log (aptly named Flapcraft) by making small modifications to the wings, rockets, engines, dashboards, logs and ramps. I really enjoyed the variety and comical nature of the available materials. For instance, the first upgrade are chicken wings giving the game a Stone Age inventor meets steampunk feel.

Pixelmator puts its core competency on full display with the gorgeous artwork found throughout Flapcraft. The colors and shading used to create the Viking are vibrant and stunning. The background landscape is pure eye candy even when your Viking crashes into the forest tree line (the ramp is really high up!). The sound effects and music are no less charming and complement the artwork perfectly. The rough grunts (indicating a high level of Viking manliness) and a jovial folk-like theme soundtrack add character and credibility to a world where Vikings test their mettle with nothing but a log and the clear sky. While Pixelmator may not be thinking of adding more gaming titles to their portfolio, Flapcraft is quite an accomplishment and we hope to see more apps from this incredibly talented and creative team.
