Contre Jour: A Beautiful Quirky App

Crazy colors, wildly animated sounds, and breakneck twists and turns all go out the window in Contre Jour, a refreshing departure from many amped up games found in the App Store. Contre Jour, made by Mokus and published by Chillingo, nests itself in simplicity and quiet elegance, and yet remains intensly engaging.  The result is a one of a kind app that is stunning to watch and amazing to play. The main character in this game is a cute little one-eyed creature, Petit, that is shaped something like a tadpole. The goal is to get Petit to absorb as many lights on the screen as possible (these lights are reminiscent of fire flies). In order to get to these lights, you must use your finger to raise or lower blobs that Petit rests on in order to move closer to them. There are also stretchy one-eyed creatures that can grab Petit and fling him toward the light in a amusing sling-shot effect. Of course, an app wouldn't be engaging without its challenges, and Contre Jour doesn't fail to deliver in that department. Petit has to overcome challenges like falling off precipices, becoming deflated by one of many thorny and cactus-like objects, or eaten by a venus fly trap type of plant that inhabits this very strange world. Contre Jour is a french term for "back lighting" typically used to describe a strong contrast between light and dark. This stark contrast in colors is an effect that is prevalent throughout the game.  As a result, the environment is simple yet elegant offering a refreshing contrast to the many apps flooding the app market with mind melting colors. The soundtrack is perfectly complementary to the quiet action on the screen featuring light classic piano music playing in the background.  Simplicity in this game is used beautifully.

On the surface, Contre Jour is a seemingly easy going game, but don't let that fool you. An abundance of challenges will keep you coming back for more. For those blood-thirsty and adrenaline junky app enthusiasts, this may not be the game for you. However, Contre Jour offers a delightful break from those type of games and is one we highly recommend picking up.
