Introduction

Count 1 to 10 Pocket by Wayne Smith is an education app ideal for helping kids learn to count. The app uses a treehouse classroom to help engage kids and keep them entertained while learning. Their teacher is Mrs. Owl who will have kids counting to 10 in no time. The app was released on Nov. 7, 2012 and is available in English.

User Experience

The user interface is engaging, lively, and fun, drawing kids in right from the launch. The graphics are bright, vivid, and use fun pictures to help kids with their learning. The game uses illustrations, pictures, and games throughout.

Features

There are a number of different ways and approaches to helping kids learn to count to 10, which is ideal since kids learn in different ways. The Count Along will have kids counting from one to 10 with Mrs. Owl; Count 1-10 is meant as an introduction to numbers; and in How Many, Mrs. Owl will be asking kids to identify how many objects are on the screen and then they must tap the correct number.

In Number Board, kids can tap on any number they say and then Mrs. Owl can shout it out. A great twist on this activity is to encourage kids to also shout out the number. In the Counting Quiz Mrs. Owl will show kids a number and then the child will need to match that number with the correct number of objects. Finally in Number Pop players need to pop numbered balloons all the way up to 10 and of course in the right order.

Through all the games and activities Mrs. Owl will not only act as a teacher but also as a guide walking kids through the games. The app is intended for preschoolers as an introduction to numbers as well as to help them with recognition and understanding of them.

Learning numbers can be a difficult and even overwhelming process for some kids so any way to make it easier, more fun, and engaging can really help with the success of learning to count. I enjoyed the illustrations quite a bit and all the bright and vivid colors that were used. Using actual objects along with numbers made a big difference in absorbing and learning about numbers.

• A fun and entertaining way to learn about counting from one to 10
• A variety of games and activities to help kids learn
• Fun graphics and illustrations to help with counting
• Kids will be guided through the process by Mrs. Owl, their own personal number coach/teacher

Cons

• Although there are a fair amount of games and activities here the app could do with even more, even if they have to be in-app purchases. Kids will quickly tire of the ones offered.
